In this blog post, I’ll share exactly how to do the Tri Color Linen Stitch. Gather your scraps and leftovers - it’s time to use them up!
What is the Linen Stitch?
The Linen Stitch is a very popular crochet stitch pattern. Many beginner crocheters like it because you only need to know how to chain and single crochet.
Consider the Linen Stitch for your next project if you want a sophisticated stitch pattern that’s still easy to accomplish. The Linen Stitch looks surprisingly like knit, allowing you to get the same effect without learning a new craft.
Crochet Techniques to Know First
The Tri Color Linen Stitch is very simple and creates a gorgeous effect. There are a few basic techniques that you’ll need to learn first to understand this stitch:
- Yarn Over: Bring the yarn over the top of the hook and down the front, creating a circle around the hook.
- Chain: Yarn over the hook, pull the hook through the loop to create a chain.
- Single Crochet: Insert the hook into the indicated stitch or space, yarn over, pull the loop through the stitch, yarn over, pull the loop through both loops on the hook.
Changing Colors with the Tri Color Linen Stitch
The magic of the Tri Color Linen Stitch is how you change color. You’ll change the color at the end of each row but DO NOT fasten off any colors while still stitching. Eventually, you will have three colors attached to your project at once. When you change color, drop the old color and pick up the new color, which is resting a few rows below. This technique allows you to change color frequently without tons of ends to weave in.
The Tri Color Linen Stitch results in floats up the side of the work. Manage the floats by adding a 1-round border to your project. Be sure to catch the floats in your border for a seamless look. Find out how to do that in my tutorial below.

Crochet Tri Color Linen Stitch Tutorial
Are you ready to take on the Tri Color Linen Stitch? You’ll fall in love with this rhythmic and addictive pattern just like I did!
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Starting Chain: Any odd number
Supplies: Yarn, crochet hook, stitch markers (optional), scissors, tapestry needle
Abbreviations
- Ch = chain
- Sc = single crochet
- Sk = skip
- Sp = space
- St = stitch
NOTES:
- Colors are referred to A, B, and C throughout the pattern.
- Ch-2 at the beginning of the row counts as sc + ch 1.
- DO NOT fasten off any colors until instructed to do so.
The color changes are the true magic of the Tri Color Linen Stitch!
Tri Color Linen Stitch Pattern
With A, chain any odd number.
ROW 1: Sc in the 3rd ch from the hook, (ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch) across row, changing color to B on the last st, turn. Drop A but do not fasten off.
ROW 2: Ch 2, sc in next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, sc in next ch-sp) across row, placing last sc in the starting ch-2 sp and changing to C, turn. Drop B but do not fasten off.
ROW 3: Repeat Row 2, changing to A at end of row. Drop C but do not fasten off.
Continue in pattern, repeating Row 2 and changing color at the end of each row. When complete, fasten off colors not in use and continue with the color of the last row. This color will be your border.
BORDER: Rotate to work along row ends. Ch 2, sc in same sp as last st of the final row. (Ch 1, sk next row, sc in the end of the next row) to next corner, working over yarn floats. Ch 2, sc in same st. Rotate to work along bottom of blanket.
(Ch 1, sk ch-sp, sc in base of next sc) to next corner. Ch 2, sc in same st. Rotate to work along side of the project.
(Ch 1, sk next row, sc in the end of the next row) to next corner, working over yarn floats. Ch 2, sl st in first sc of round. Fasten off.
