Meet the New Flock by Amour Fou Crochet

Birds are tweeting, and we are absolutely thrilled to introduce three new crochet and amigurumi patterns that will make your crafty heart flutter! If you're looking to dive into a fresh amigurumi project, you're just in the right place.

The chirp-tastic talented Carla Mitrani is the creative mind behind @amourfou_crochet, and she is ready for her newest  flock of amigurumi and crochet bird patterns to hatch! Whether you're an old hawk or ready to spread your wings and fly right out in it, these patterns are guaranteed to put some wind under your wings. Grab your favorite crochet hook and let’s get started!

For those who might be new to your amazing work at @amourfou_crochet, how did your amigurumi journey begin?

I began crocheting as a hobby, during the maternity leave of my second child, almost 15 years ago. I’m a journalist and all my life I worked as a producer and writing for magazines. But I’ve always loved dolls. When I was little, I made them from pieces or cardboard and scraps of fabric my Grandma discarded. Crochet gave me a beautiful technique to bring the drawings in my head to life. It still feels magical to me that I can actually hold and hug my ideas. That joy never gets old.

How did you choose the vibrant color palettes for the flock?

I wanted a colorful palette to celebrate Spring, but my actual inspiration came from a new BBC Pride and Prejudice spin-off, ‘The Other Bennet Sister’! I’m a huge Jane Austen fan, and you can almost see the resemblance between the Bennet sisters and the three birds on the log. It proves that project inspiration can truly come from anywhere.

Let’s talk about the stars of the show!

You’ve designed three completely unique bird projects. Can you introduce us to them and tell us how you made them feel like they belong to the same little flock?

The first design is a trio of bird friends catching up on a log, Spring Birds. It’s interactive, so you can change their positions, which is great for kids to play with!

The second is a sweet bird in a nest that looks amazing hanging from the ceiling, Bird Nest. You can bring some joy to your office or play peekaboo with it in a nursery!

The last one is a garland of white doves that acts as a blank canvas for your embroidery, Bird Garland. While my embroidery skills are basic, I know there are makers who will do wonders with it!

To make all three projects feel unified, I created a dialogue between their color palettes and used tiny, consistent details like the placement of the eyes and cheeks.

We know our community is going to immediately fly to their yarn stashes! Before they grab their hooks, do you have any quick tips or favorite yarns for these patterns?

I made them all using Hobbii’s Rainbow Cotton 8/4, which I absolutely love. There are so many colors to choose from, so my biggest tip is to just run wild! Make them in any color you want. The possibilities are as endless as the birds in nature, and that’s the true beauty of it.

Ready to add a whole new flock to your crochet collection? Meet the Spring Birds! This pattern features a delightful trio of little birds resting on a log. You'll be tweet tweet-ing as you start crocheting it! Just like the nest project, you will use a cotton 8/4 yarn for the birds, leaves, and the small branches they perch on. For the textured log and little stubs, you'll switch over to cotton 8/8 yarn. While there aren't too many color changes, you will get to spread your wings and flex your making skills by pinning and carefully sewing the multiple parts together.

What You Would Need:

Ready to feather your nest with a project that is just bursting with cozy vibes? The Bird Nest is the perfect amigurumi design to swoop into! This adorable pattern features a cute bird that fits perfectly inside its very own hanging nest. It is an egg-ceptionally project worked in a continuous spiral. You get to mix and match your cotton yarn for this one to ensure your new little flock member is snug and secure! The bird and its decorative leaves are crocheted with cotton 8/4, while the nest uses cotton 8/8 to make sure your creation is nice and sturdy.

What You Would Need:

Yarn: Rainbow Cotton 8/4 (or substitute with Friends Cotton 8/4), Rainbow Cotton 8/8 (or substitute with Friends Cotton 8/8)

You can easily customize it by adding as many birds and flowers as you need to reach your desired length. The best part is that each bird is like a blank canvas, giving you the freedom to express your creativity by playing around with the colors or to embroider unique designs on their wings and chests.
