When you decrease, you reduce the number of stitches in your pattern. It’s a simple technique that you will encounter quite often in projects like baskets, amigurumi, and many types of clothing.
Single crochet decreases are usually abbreviated with the letters sc dec.
NB!: Please note that this tutorial uses US terms. In the UK, the single crochet goes by the name ‘Double Crochet’ (tr).
How to do a single crochet decrease
- Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You should now have two loops on your hook.
- Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You should now have three loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook.
- You just did your first single crochet decrease!
