1. What do you like most about crocheting?
“I love how creative you can be with it. You can make so many things with just one stitch. When I first started designing, I used single crochet stitches for most of my patterns. Learning and incorporating new stitches and techniques is so much fun!“
2. What is your favorite crochet technique or pattern at the moment?
“I’m really enjoying the jasmine stitch. It has a unique look and adds a special touch to accessories. One of my designs in the ‘Carry On’ Collection uses the jasmine stitch.”
3. What is your favorite crochet tool that you just can't live without?
“My Clover crochet hooks are a must-have. I’ve tried many crochet hooks, and Clover works best for me. I love the ergonomic handles. When you crochet as much as I do, comfort is key!“

4. Can you walk us through your creative process?
“I often get ideas for designs when I’m yarn shopping. For this collection, I browsed the Hobbii website and was first inspired by the blue shades of Hobbii Portobello. It reminded me of Britney Spears' all-denim outfit. Next, I browsed the bag accessories and found backpack hardware that went perfectly with Hobbii Bungee Mini. Lastly, knowing I wanted to design a pattern with Hobbii Friends Ribbon, I brainstormed a few concepts that would work well with this material."
After coming up with the initial concepts, I sketched out the designs and planned out the materials list. Once my materials arrived, I started the pattern-writing process. I typically write a first draft of the pattern before I start crocheting. Then, I crochet the bag following my draft and make adjustments as I go. Along the way, I also take process photos. When the pattern is complete, I send it to my tech editor for review. She ensures that the math, punctuation, and other details are correct. Next, I send the pattern to a pattern tester, who makes the design from start to finish. They provide feedback on the pattern and the finished bag.
Finally, after making my final edits and voilà! The designs are born.“
5. Can you tell us a bit more about the new patterns?
"Each bag in the collection features a different style. All the projects are easy-level patterns, suitable for those who are comfortable with the basics of crochet. Additionally, all the bags incorporate bag accessories, making them not only beautiful but also functional!"
The Forever in Blue Jeans – Crossbody Bag
"The 'Forever in Blue Jeans' crossbody bag pattern is my take on a classic saddle bag. It features an adjustable crossbody strap and a snap closure.
The purse is crafted with Portobello yarn, which is a blend of cotton, wool, and acrylic. To make the bag sturdy, use two strands of yarn together. The body of the bag is made using single crochet stitches, ensuring simplicity and durability. The flap is designed with the unique jasmine stitch which gives the bag some personality! Lastly, it has the cutest tassel on the flap."
The Betty Belt Bag – Crossbody Bag
"The 'Betty Belt Bag' crossbody bag is inspired by the trending crossbody bum bags. This pattern uses Friends Ribbon yarn, which is 100% cotton. Using two strands of the yarn together gives the bag structure. It's crafted using half double crochet stitches in the round.
The cotton, adjustable strap is super comfortable and attaches to the bag with D rings. A zipper closure ensures the bag is functional and easy to access. You can either sew the zipper into your project or follow a tutorial linked in the pattern for crocheting the zipper in."
The Bungee Backpack
"The 'Bungee Backpack' is my version of a mini backpack purse. The pattern uses Bungee Mini yarn, which is a tube yarn made from a blend of cotton and polyester.
Begin the pattern with a PU leather base. The written instructions and accompanying photos will guide you through crocheting around this base. The body of the bag is crafted using single crochet and single crochet back loop only stitches, creating a striped effect.
Complete the look by adding a PU leather drawstring, cotton adjustable straps, and a PU leather flap with a magnetic snap. Finally, sew on the side pockets, and your bag is ready to go!"
6. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their crochet journey?
"Head over to YouTube and search for tutorials! On my channel, I offer video tutorials for many of the techniques used in my designs, as well as complete crochet project tutorials. Additionally, I share beginner crochet tips on my Instagram page, @bagsbybento."
7. And finally, what are your top 3 tips for fellow crocheters?
"1 – Use stitch markers! If you struggle to get your edges straight, then place a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of each row. This will help you see where each row ends, so you don’t miss any stitches.
2 – Do the gauge swatch. I used to skip it too, but I promise it will help your crochet project turn out the correct size. If your swatch is larger than it should be, use a smaller hook. If your swatch is smaller, use a larger hook.
3 – If your hands or wrists hurt, TAKE A BREAK. I learned the hard way that it's possible to overuse your hands to the point of injury. Regularly take breaks and stretch your hands. Even when taking a break, you can still enjoy yarn shopping and browsing patterns!"
