1. Can you tell us about #BeYourOwnStarCAL?

“The idea for the name came from the crochet community itself. We’re all individual stars in this little universe—each different, yet connected by our shared love for crochet.

The shape of the shawl makes it stand out and ties into the overall message. It’s not a triangle; it’s more of a star shape—a half-star shape, to be precise. This unique design gives it a better drape and makes it stand out from the crowd. It’s not something you see every day. And, along with the shape, the texture is very special too.”

What is a Crochet-Along?

A Crochet-Along is one big, communal crochet party! Instead of sharing the entire pattern at once, it’s split into smaller parts. We all start together, revealing each part of the pattern over a set timeline, but you can pick up your hook whenever you please. 🥳 The magic lies in watching everyone’s progress, row by row, stitch by stitch!

2. Can you tell us more about the texture and stitches for this shawl?

“I wanted to keep it simple while still adding texture. I used popcorn and puff stitches, spreading them throughout the shawl to keep the design from becoming too complicated. I didn’t want to overload any section with too many different stitches, so I made sure to keep everything balanced.

For the edging, I added a picot border. It’s really easy to make but adds a unique touch. A detail like that can really make the whole project stand out.”

3. How was your design proces for this project?

“I always use a notebook to sketch my ideas before crocheting. When designing this shawl, the first part went smoothly, but the second part didn’t turn out as I had imagined. I tried a few rows, wasn’t happy with it, and put it aside in the ‘naughty corner’ for a break. The next day, I still wasn’t satisfied, so I ripped it out and started fresh. Sometimes stepping away helps me find a new perspective. Luckily, I’m happy with how it turned out in the end.”

4. What is the skill level of this CAL?

“It’s intermediate because it uses a variety of stitches, such as popcorn stitches, puff stitches, and front and back post stitches. I also use standing stitches, like a standing double crochet, to start new rows. Additionally, the pattern includes extended stitches, such as the extended double crochet.

Beginners can prepare by practicing these stitches before starting. The pattern uses more advanced stitches than basic single or double crochets, but they’re not too difficult. I remember when I was a beginner, I’d always look up how to make a stitch before starting a project that included it. That’s how I built my confidence in crochet.”

5. What can you tell us about the yarn choice of this project?

“I wanted something colorful yet lightweight to ensure the shawl would drape well. It also needed to be suitable for spring and easy to block. I chose a colorful yarn and paired it with solid colors, as the solid colors really make the colorful sections and textures pop.”

6. Why join this CAL?

“It’s going to be fun because the stitches are varied. Every row is different, so you won’t get bored or feel like you’re repeating the same thing over and over. You’ll learn new stitches, try new techniques, and enjoy the process. Plus, at the end, you’ll have a beautiful shawl to show for it!”

7. What’s your best advice for this project?

“For beginners, I recommend practicing the special stitches—popcorn, puff, front and back post stitches—and learning techniques like standing double crochet and extended double crochet before starting.

For intermediate crocheters: Keep an eye on your stitch counts. It’s easy to miss a stitch, and even I made mistakes while designing and had to frog two rows.

And for advanced crocheters: Don’t forget to block the shawl when it’s finished. Blocking is essential—it helps settle the stitches, enhances the drape, and can even increase the size of the shawl by about 10 centimeters.”

8. Finally, what are you most excited about?

“This is my first CAL with Hobbii, so I’m really excited to see everyone’s creations and hear their feedback. Each shawl will look unique because of the different colors and varying thickness of the yarn used. I’m nervous but also really looking forward to it!”
